    Barbaro Updates 834

    Updates are now here

Update 4812: Phew! After going winless with five starters yesterday Charming Assassin won our only race today at Woodbine!

Update 4811: The first full week of phase II of the ABR YouTube contest re: Horse Slaughter is over. Video 2 remains the leader, but two other videos (numbers 4 and 24) gained more points this week. Certainly Video number 4 is closing in on the leader, and the more recent videos are starting to gain more momentum. Here is a full list of videos and scores: Leader Board.

May 10 noon is the deadline for the contest.

In total the videos have now received 23,397 page views (an increase of 5341 over last week) and 1325 comments (an increase of 403 over last week).

Update 4810: A straightforward morning this morning for Steve at Woodbine. We had five sets, and all mine galloped nicely. The barn is definitely getting busier with more horses, and more people to help out. This afternoon we have one runner, so lets hope for a little racing luck!

And last night Commentator, one of the leading candidates for much of last year for the older horse division, was upset in his debut at Charles Town in the inaugural Charles Town Classic. Charles Town is a tighter track and homefield advantage may have helped Researcher take the honors. Commentator checked in fourth: Researcher Right at Home in CT Classic.

Update 4809: As noted, WinStar Farm's horse, Advice, pulled an upset in the Coolmore Lexington Stakes. Advice Pulls 15-1 Shocker in Lexington and Advice takes Coolmore Lexington-with Video

Excerpt: "I actually had a good trip from the 11-hole," said Gomez. "(Square Eddie) kind of got left (at the starting gate), it looked like. I just kind of clocked him the whole way and followed him from there. I just took my time with this horse, and he gave me real confidence".

Update 4808: Not too surprising, Stardom Bound is out of the Oaks and getting some needed rest: STARDOM BOUND SIDELINED; OUT OF KENTUCKY OAKS.

Advice comes flying to win the Lexington. Square Eddie moved too soon to take the lead going wide around the far turn and faded in deep stretch: Thoroughbredtimes Video: Lexington.

We were blanked this afternoon at Woodbine with two seconds and a long day!

Update 4807: Off back for the races at Woodbine. And I'll also be keeping an eye on things at Keeneland!

Update 4806: A straightforward morning this morning at Woodbine for Steve. I had six sets. No gate schoolers. All went nicely. We had more horses ship in this morning too. I think seven. Our barn is about 2/3rds full now, so we are going to get busier. We also have five runners this afternoon.

The weather has also picked up, let's see if this is a temporary phenomena or more permanent.

Update 4805: The final traditional Kentucky Derby prep is today. Square Eddie is the favorite for the Coolmore Lexington Stakes (G2) where he will take on 11 contenders: Square Eddie Set for Coolmore Lexington.

The last time a horse won the Lexington Stakes and went on to win the Kentucky Derby was in 1999 with Charismatic.

Update 4804: Paragallo abuse case on the Today Show today.

Update 4803: ABR YouTube contest gets more coverage: Thousands view anti-horse slaughter video contest.

Update 4802: New York favorite Tin Cup Chalice, was euthanized this morning after a training accident: Tin Cup Chalice euthanized following accident.

    Discussion: Tin Cup Chalice Euthanized!.

Update 4801: Railbird here, with your weekly update.

So, the Lexington is a Derby prep after all, although I'm skeptical anyone will emerge as a legitimate Derby threat. That includes Square Eddie, who won the Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland last fall, but is unraced since finishing second to The Pamplemousse in the San Rafael in January, a long layoff due to an injury. "I would want to see a really good effort and have him come out of it in good shape," said trainer Doug O'Neill, leaving little doubt that should 'Eddie finish well and sound, he'll start next at Churchill in two weeks. Edgar Prado, without a Derby horse after Imperial Council flopped in the Wood, picks up the mount on the colt.

Also entered is Jeranimo, third in the San Felipe behind Pioneerof the Nile and Fiesty Suances, another Derby-bound if he picks up enough earnings on Saturday, and Masala, third in the Gotham. Note: Hull will be scratched to run in the Derby Trial next weekend.

ESPN2 will air live coverage of the Lexington beginning at 5:00 p.m. ET.

Don't forget to check out a couple of other races on Saturday: At Charles Town, New York-bred Horse of the Year Commentator kicks off his 2009 campaign in the Charles Town Classic. "He has had a pretty good winter ... I'm hoping he gives a great effort," said trainer Nick Zito. Mast Track is the only other graded stakes winner entered, but he's also trying dirt for the first time in his career. A bigger threat may come from local starter Researcher, who set a track record going nine furlongs last month.

At Hawthorne, Santa Teresita, second to Life Is Sweet in the Santa Margarita, looks the likely favorite in the Sixty Sails Handicap.

On Sunday at Keeneland, Dominican and Monba -- the 2007 and 2008 Blue Grass Stakes winners -- will meet in the Bel Ali Stakes. Monba is coming off a third in the Thunder Road Handicap in February and a fourth in the Santa Anita Handicap last month. Dominican is making his first start of the year.

Update 4800: Well it may be spring time at Woodbine, soon! The weather is starting to warm up a little. We had five sets this morning at Steve's. Another very pleasant morning's work. Three of mine went to the gate for a little gate schooling. All went nicely. We have no runners this afternoon, but five tomorrow. All will be paddock schooling during the second race. I'll go back and help a little.

As I was leaving I ran into Joy. She ships horses from Fair Hill, and brought in Graham Motion's runner for this afternoon. Always fun to catch up with people from Fair Hill and get some news!

Update 4799: Many of the Kentucky Derby contenders are arriving or have arrived at Churchill Downs now that we are only a couple weeks away. Yesterday, Pioneerof the Nile and Chocolate Candy, two top California runners, arrived (Top West Coast Derby Contenders Arrive). And Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin announced that Mafaaz, the winner of the Kentucky Derby Challenge at Kempton Park will not run in the Kentucky Derby (McLaughlin: Mafaaz Won't Run in Derby).

    And please keep calling.

    Happy Friday to All,
Today is a special day. Today would be the 37th birthday of the Queen of the track. On April 17, 1972, Ruffian was foaled. If I may ask of you, please make your calls today in Her honor.

She outran the wind and shone dark like the night. Her light will shine forever.

Ruffian, my Sofie, I will always love you.

Nice day at Keeneland yesterday. Michael Matz had several running. His 20-1 Artisan won.

Also met, 1967 winning Kentucky Derby jockey Bobby Ussery. He rode Proud Clarion. He also rode 1968 winner Dancer's Image. Dancer's Image was later disqualified because Bute was found in his post race testing. Forward Pass became the official 1968 winner.

I stopped watching the races after seeing Ruffian go down. Years later I had left the TV on Channel 7 (ABC) for my cats while I was out, and when I returned the Derby was on - I didn't turn it off, and I've been back ever since.

I did not know today (April 17) is her birthday. It is a very special re-birthday for me - because on April 17, 1993 I parted company with my QH Joe when he made the one move I couldn't stay on bareback - the stand-up rear - and heard the crack when I landed on my back - and somebody had to get Joe home safe, so not realizing I had just cracked a vertebra (L3) I walked us out of the woods. ANYWAY April 17 has ever since been an extremely emotional day for me, because when 10 days after the fact I finally had somebody drive me to a doctor, when he looked at the Xrays he was astounded I had walked in and said it was a miracle I wasn't paralyzed. From then on I was referred to in his practice as "the ambulatory broken back". So Lee thank you so much for tying that fateful day of mine, to the life of one of my heroes. I am really touched.

Hiya, FsOB! It's really TGIF today because I am taking a vacation day AND the sun is shining brightly on my old CT home! Nikita loves sunny, warm weather as much as my 2nd Husky, Nina, did. Kita has been out on "her deck" sunning herself and now she is really hot.

Let's see, so far it's 11 AM & I've made a huge lasagne, run three loads of laundry, and washed a pile of dishes. Now it's on to washing some walls in prep for our KY Derby Day party. The UPS man just delivered the Smithfield ham from Gwaltney's for that event, so I am getting cranked!

Actually, today is referred to as "Great Friday" by Orthodox Christians. Brent & I shall go to church at 3 PM for services. Tomorrow night at 11 PM the Easter vigil begins. Wishing everyone here a great weekend.

Thank you to Sofie's Lee for reminding us that today is the anniversary of Ruffian's birth in 1972. Alex, do you have any inside info on why Mafaaz will not be entered into the KY Derby field?

April 17 Cherokee Devotional [sharing email from Harriette Brillianthawk]

Don't keep score. It is a tiresome thing, and if I give you something, it is yours, no strings attached, If you give me something I am grateful, but it is a kindness our friendship does not have to depend upon.

Who owes whom? Are we in competition? Is this a race where one person glows with accomplishment and the other sags from running and getting nowhere? No, there is no need to keep score. It wearies the soul and the spirit so that it cannot fit the slot of friendship.

O, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thought nor measure words.

Thinking of Ruffian on the anniversary of her grand entry into this world. What a great place it became for a small child who wanted to be her, whose heart was broken a few short years later when her fragile legs betrayed her huge heart and spirit. You will always be in my heart, beautiful girl.

Thinking of Lyn Lifshin today, too. If you're reading, I can never thank you enough for writing The Licorice Daughter, which will always be on my coffee table.

Please everyone, pray for the horses of 3Strikes Ranch, for their safe extradition and recovery, and for all those working to take them to safe haven.

reason number zillion and two, to swiftly get the federal anti horse slaughter legislation passed:

[thanks BarbAZ for emailing this article)

Study of ND horse slaughterhouse approved

    Apr 16 2009 10:02AM
    Associated PressEds: APNewsNow.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) North Dakota lawmakers have agreed to spend $50,000 on a study of whether a horse slaughterhouse can be built in the state.

The bill says North Dakota's Commerce Department should study whether legal and regulatory barriers now prevent construction of a horse slaughter plant.

If the project can be done, the study would look into how much a plant would cost and potential markets for its meat.

North Dakota's House voted 86-5 on Thursday to approve the study. The bill now goes to Gov. John Hoeven.

Horse slaughter is a contentious subject in a number of states.

The Montana Legislature approved legislation to encourage a horse slaughter plant in that state, but Gov. Brian Schweitzer vetoed key parts of it.

The [North Dakota] bill is HB1496.

PS - don't be discouraged that we didn't pick up any new cosponsors this week - Congress was in recess, and though offices were staffed, I don't think that such paperwork as cosponsorship was going through. Look for us to pick up more cs's in the near future!

    FEDERAL TARGET LISTS

Once again, we're in a holding pattern with 115 House cosponsors for HR 503 and 14 Senate cosponsors for S 727. Have posted the lists of cosponsors in my last post, for everyone's convenience, and will update as and when more cosponsors are added.

(Note - The date shown after each legislator's name on the target lists below, is the date he/she signed on to cosponsor the respective former antiHS bills in the 110th Congress - HR 6598 in the House and S 311 in the Senate.)

Remember - as former cosponsors of anti-horse slaughter legislation, those on these lists are already on our side and should be easy to approach. We are seeking for them to sign up to cosponsor the respective Bills - HR 503 in the House and S 727 in the Senate.

FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE - You can use this toll-free number 800-828-0498 and ask for a legislator by name (or ask for extension, last 5 numbers of legislator's office phone)

    Dear Fren SofiesLee,

My heart is wth yours today. The magnificent RUFFIAN thrilled and delighted us with her beauty and speed. Like our Beloved BARBARO, she left us all too soon.

Over these many years, I have read everything I could find about her. Back in 1982, I even named my beautiful little black German Shepherd puppy after her.

Thank you for reminding us. I will always love her too.

    Your FOB Fren, O

Just read on Bloodhorse.com that Tin Cup Chalice had to be euthanized this afternoon after a collision on the track during training with another horse who had bolted. (Zany, 4, also euthanized). Another good honest horse lose. Prayers for both!

I'M SO SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT TIN CUP - RIP BEAUTIFUL BOY!

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE! JUST CHECKING IN ON SOME OF THE INFO FOR THE BARBARO MEMORIAL.

Hiya, FsOB! I just finished placing a call to Governor Schweitzer's office in Montana. The young man who answers the phone there has delightful "people skills" and an amazing database. The minute I said my name, he asked if I lived at what is my street address, believe it or not. So if you have any family or friends willing to call (406) 444-3111 who haven't done so previously, please ask them to call. They can help convince the Governor to veto the legislation that would permit opening a horse slaughterhouse in Montana.

Again wishing a happy day to everyone honouring Ruffian's memory. How sad about the collision of Tin Cup Chalice and Zany, especially that it occurred on the day of Ruffian's birth.

To Wendy & Alex, the spam buster is needed again. Please see the posts timed at 8:26 PM & 9:41 PM.

    #### To Sandra: I was alarmed this morning when I saw TV news about hailstorms in Lubbock. Sorry that Chief is being additionally stressed by the weather.
To Rose: We aren't alone in wishing to see an update about La Ville Rouge and her newest foal, dubbed "Babynor/Bobbeynor".... Debbie LA keeps checking the Mill Ridge Website daily. Rose, the last I read, Quality Road's crack in his foot was healing nicely. I think he may be able to run in the Derby after all.
    Hiya, Sherry & Otherlyn!
To Debbie LA: Now I am worn out, after washing walls, going to church, & then taking Nikita on a much longer than usual walk with Brent. Kita was in high spirits and wanted to take many detours in the neighbourhood. I just couldn't resist letting her enjoy herself. But now I am tired. We are planning to go hear a young Iraq War veteran read some of his poetry tonight in Mystic. I hope I don't embarrass myself by dozing in public! Thanks for posting the info about the horseracing themed films on TCM for 05/01/2009. ####

So sorry for Tin Cup Chalice and his connections. I met his connections and jockey Pedro at Saratoga last year when he won the Albany, they loved that horse and were so happy he won. Just tragic for everyone involved, bless you Tin Cup and Zany.

Sandra and Chief - thinking of you both.

We were invited to a meet and greet at Calder Race Track last night - I am honored to be the Advisory Board Director for our new project at Pure Thoughts, the Thoroughbred Rehab and Placement Divison - check out our website and meet the wonderful horses we have saved so far including a son of Smarty Jones. Calder is partnering with us to show other tracks there are options for all horses and we are so proud to have their support and finally have a plan in place to make sure every horse racing at Calder has a safe place to go regardless of need -

Can anyone help this boy? He's very sweet and needs rescue ASAP! If you can help, please email Anita at ascott@embarqmail.com (@embarqmail.com). Transport help is available! Please crosspost.

HARLEY M Lab/Shepherd mix, black, adult, large

Harley is a handsome year old lab shepherd mix. He was adopted from a rescue group in Roanoke and then taken to a high kill pound in Franklin County, VA. He is looking for a family that will commit to him and keep him safe. He loves to play fetch and play with other dogs. He is a complete joy and needs someone to be committed to him for the rest of his life. If you would like to spend your afternoons throwing a tennis ballor taking a jog with a fantastic companion.or just lounging around.then you should consider Harley.

re what's going on with Stardom Bound, here's what the Paulick Report says

    http://www.paulickreport.com/blog/stardom-bound-sidelined-out-of-kentucky-oaks/

STARDOM BOUND SIDELINED; OUT OF KENTUCKY OAKS
TVG reports that Stardom Bound will not go in the Kentucky Oaks following her third-place finish in the Ashland Stakes at Keeneland. The Ashland was her first loss since finishing second as a maiden in the Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar last August. She had won five consecutive Grade 1 races prior to the Ashland, including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, which helped secure her claim on the Eclipse Award as the outstanding 2-year-old filly of 2008.

Jill Byrne reported on TVG that Michael Iavarone of IEAH Stable, which purchased the daughter of Tapit for $5.7 million at the Fasig-TIpton fall mixed sale, said Stardom Bound was not herself following the Ashland and she would be given some time off. There was no specific physical ailment cited, and the report indicated she would return to the races later this summer o[r] fall.

The absence of Stardom Bound makes Rachel Alexandra a heavy favorite in the May 1 Oaks.

    Hay, Kathy...

I was there this morning...had such a wonderful time. The horses...lord, the horses were joyous today. Rosetta got so worked up to see me wander outside to the padocks, they had to close her window for a few minutes so the morning grooming could get done...but once I got carrots to her, she was just a love. Bubble Gum is fine, Tap Softly was also very happy to get some treats - they are the horses with the "corner offices".

Triumphant was Mr. Personality again. Loved getting carrots and lots of attention. Draw the Line figured out I had carrots very quickly and she and I had quiet time - as did Saar Treaty (who has returned from Florida) and Sky Heat. All three of them wanted quiet time and they got it. Jose's horses (another trainer who has stalls in Tim's barn) were wonderful. There is a filly in the end stall and Jose kept warning me that she might bite - but once I let her know I respect her boundaries, she was fine. Jose said she's never taken carrots from people before...don't know if that was true, but the horse and I understood each other. There were four horses in the back section - don't know who they belong to, but they got carrots as well.

As I was getting ready to leave, a couple from Lancaster County, PA called out to me - they were lost trying to catch up with friends to go riding. They befriended Triumphant and Draw the Line - very sweet couple. Told them about ABR, gave them my card, invited them to come here and meet the famblee...the two horses were very well behaved toward them and they got carrots and attention...they LOOOOOVE it...lol.

FOLKS, WE HAVE AN URGENT SITUATION ON THE DISCUSSION BOARD...please note the donation info in the last paragraph and do your best to help! I know we are all strapped, and I initially felt intimidated by some very generous donations (I am on a fixed income and can only afford $15), but if EVERYONE sent at least $5. it will be gratefully received by the folks "on the ground" who are doing their best to save these mustangs. What a blessing to have such a respected person as Jerry Finch from Habitat for Horses present to lend his assistance!

Scores of Neglected Mustangs Imperiled on Nebraska Ranch

Ranch Owner in Jail and Need for Aid is Urgent

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Jerry Finch 409-682-6621

    19 April 2009

Alliance, Nebraska -– At least 60 horses are dead and more than 100 others are seriously emaciated at a mustang facility in Morrill County, Nebraska. Habitat for Horses, an equine rescue organization, received reports last week of problems at the 3-Strikes Ranch. Jerry Finch of the equine rescue organization Habitat for Horses returned from flying over the property early Sunday, and reports that “The situation is even worse than we suspected.” They spotted another 20 animals on the range, several barely able to stand. Another 50-100 emaciated horses are in holding pens with only a small amount of muddy and trampled alfalfa. They are suffering from a variety of ailments including severe worm infestation and terribly neglected hooves. Two young foals, approximately four months old, were found dead. Necropsies have been performed on both; a full report, including toxicology results is due back Friday.

3-Strikes Ranch, according to its web site, is a "Mustang outpost, a Non-Profit habitat to hundreds of mustangs from all over the United States, a natural environment for wild horses to run on the open prairies of the Sand Hills." Mustangs captured by the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) that were not adopted after three attempts -- three strikers -- were sent to Jason Meduna at 3-Strikes Ranch. Meduna also accepted horses from people unable to care for their mustangs, and those in need of special training. A number of private owners who had placed horses with Meduna have already retrieved their animals. The BLM was at the facility last week and removed one of the three horses for which they currently hold title. The others were reported to be dead.

According to ranch owner Meduna more than 300 animals were living at the ranch in January. He has attributed the deaths to toxic poisoning, but to date no proof of this has been provided. Meduna is currently in jail on an animal cruelty charge stemming from the horse already removed by the BLM.

Habitat for Horses is assisting local law enforcement, the Bureau of Land Management, and a number of volunteers in caring for these animals.

Hay and feed-based wormer are urgently needed. Local families are urged to contact Finch if they are able to provide tactical support for this operation. Donations for hay are being collected by Front Range Equine Rescue in Colorado. donatebuy@frontrangeequinerescue.org If you do not have access to Paypal you can mail donations to: Front Range Equine Rescue, P.O. Box 307, Larkspur, CO 80118. Please notate on your check and/or Paypal donations that it is for "3-Strikes Mustangs". Any and all help with hay is greatly appreciated.

OMG 3-Strikes Ranch and the BLM, this plays right in to the pro slaughter side. This could be a deliberate starvation to prove their point, and to stop our bill. I don't trust the BLM they sent letters to my Alabama senators and rep's, about how much money it is costing the Government to care for all the wild horses. The Cattlemen Association, may be hind this. The BLM want to sale all the wild horse to slaughter, $$$$ and rent the land to the Cattlemen. Greed never stops, when it comes to horses. The poor horse, it all makes me sick!

If they are closed, leave a message, including the dog's number, and then follow up with a call at 10 am, after they open. Ask to speak with Jeff. It might be a good idea to contact the volunteer as well. Please do not ask this shelter to hold an animal, or help with boarding, vetting, transporting, etc. because they will not do that. Being preoccupied with the nightmare at Three Strikes Ranch (see my post timestamped 9:30 pm), I have been remiss in not sending very special greetings to a most handsome young man from a distinguished family...

Posted by: Nancy Naughty Nutmegger at April 20, 2009 12:38 AM

Debbie, these mustangs were signed over to 3StrikesRanch. 3Strikes Ranch was to create a natural habitat for mustangs, as muc as possible, but the major flaw in this project was that it was a 2500 acre ranch. There were only a few that the BLM still held title for, and it was investigating of them that revealed they were starving and dying, some of them already dead. I hate to use a phrase that I think is used way to often and doesn't usually mean a lot, except maybe this time. It is what it is. Horses were starved by a person consigned to care for them. One person. A person entrusted by the BLM to provide sanctuary and care for them for all of their natural lives.

Dear Gang - please petition the Universe, or say a prayer for Honeysuckle the Pit Bull. She left us today for a foster home, and if all goes well, she will be adopted into a willing family. They are going to work with her alongside the foster parents. The foster Mom came for her, and understandably, didn't want me involved in this process. So I walked behind with Honey's things. After they were in the car, Honey looked at me with 'that look'. I kissed my fingertips and pressed them to the window. Off they went. There are so very many that need to be rescued. If you'd like to see Honeysuckle, she is on Pet Finder. They will keep her on the site "just in case". http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=13426470
