I started looking for a horse after hearing of a horrible rescue. The horse was not savagable after all and had to be put down. That encouraged me even more to start looking at other horses that needed a new permanent home. I found the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program on line and saw a horse I was interested in. I made contact and set up a appointment to go for a visit, and introduction. I was extremely impressed with the facility: the care provided to the horses, the time spent with the potential adopter and the importance of finding a suitable owner for the horse. After spending time with the horse I made appointment to meet, and being introduced to another, and riding both horses - I was feeling a bit down as I did not connect with either. The program director approached me and said "I would like you to meet one more horse". She took me down to the end of the row and introduced me to "Alex", and that moment has changed my life. After spending time in his stall grooming him and then riding him I knew I wanted him to be part of my life. I went home and immediatly started the process to adopt him, the day could not come quick enough for me to bring him home.

I knew Alex was a winner in my heart from the day I met him at the FLTAP - but when I did the formal research a couple months after I adopted him - I found out that the winner of my heart actually had done well with his race history as well. He raced in 26 races and placed in 13 of them! Half the races he ran in - he placed in! Alex himself came in 3rd place 9 times- 2nd place 3 times - and he came in 1st place 4 times! Where he raced: Aquaduct - NYC, Belmont - NYC, Saratoga Springs - NYC, Meadowlands - NJ, Monmouth - NJ, Finger Lakes -NY of course! I found out through his pedegree that he comes from very strong bloodlines. Alexander on Pedigreequery His Grand Father "Sunny's Halo" won the Kentucky Derby in 1983!!

What will he do now? I am working with him on becoming a basic pleasure horse and eventually trail horse. The pleasure part - DONE!!! He has brought me SO much pleasure! He is a very affectionate horse that loves to be groomed and given attention, he is also coming along nicely under saddle. I have only had Alex 4 months but these 4 months have changed my life. He is making new friends and enjoys horsing around with them. He loves the one on one attention and affection I provide, as do I enjoy the attention and affection he provides. What a loving, gentle horse I have found - and I am so very - very grateful that Kerri, The Program and Facility Manager, had the perception to realize I had not found the one for me yet and said "I would like you to meet one more horse".
