Description of Rescue

CANTER stands for Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses. CANTER started as a solution to help racehorses find new careers by connecting buyers and sellers through a free service posting racehorses for sale on the internet. The program quickly became a national web-based phenomenon. Since the first CANTER Michigan program started in 1997, CANTER has grown to include chapters in California, Colorado, Illinois, Ohio, the Mid-Atlantic Region, the New England Region, and Pennsylvania. All CANTER chapters are all-volunteer organizations with 501(c)3 federal non-profit status.

Many CANTER chapters have also been able to expand their programs to Phase II, which includes acceptance of owner-relinquished horses. CANTER California usually has several CANTER-sponsored horses--check our listings to find them. CANTER assumes ownership of the horse and all associated expenses for board and medical care. Some of the Phase II programs have affiliated with veterinary colleges such as Michigan State and Ohio State Universities to provide care which allows sick and injured racehorses to return to soundness and the possibility of a new life after the finish line. In addition, CANTER also works to educate horse owners and the general public on the use of the racehorse within the industry, and offer support to those who choose to adopt a versatile, intelligent, athletic Thoroughbred ex-racehorse.

The CANTER California chapter began in January 2009. It currently has volunteers working at Golden Gate Fields and Pleasanton race tracks in northern California, and Santa Anita, Los Alamitos, Del Mar, and Hollywood Park racetracks in southern California.

Rescue Network

List of other rescues this rescue works with.

We started in January 2009, so are a new chapter, but we have shared horse adoption listings with both Neigh Savers, Inc. and Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue. In May of 2009, CANTER California worked with Red Bucket Equine Rescue, based in Orange County, CA to remove 37 starved, neglected thoroughbreds from a property at which they had been dumped.

In October of 2009 CanterCA began a partnership with trainer Karen Murdock. Karen owns and trains Lukas, an ex-racehorse, whose training is featured on Karen's website "Playing with Lukas". While Karen is not officially a rescue, she has agreed to help re-train CANTER California owned horses at no charge. Her first student is retired racehorse CeeMisterB. Her progress with him and other CANTER California owned horses will be documented at our blog: http://cantersocal.blogspot.com/
