Greatness and Goodness: Barbaro and his Legacy, is a thorough biography of the life of the racehorse Barbaro, and an examination of Barbaro’s legacy. The book is drawn from more than 100 interviews of people who knew and worked with him both during his racing career, and when he was a patient at New Bolton Center. The book explores Barbaro’s life, asks whether he was a great racehorse, and examines why the colt became such an inspirational figure. The story is beautifully illustrated, and is accompanied by a 164 page photo essay, that complements the narrative and retells the entire story in pictures. ESPNs Jeannine Edwards, who reported extensively on the saga while Barbaro was at New Bolton Center, and covered Barbaro during his Triple Crown attempt, wrote the foreword for this book. Barbaro’s co-owner, Gretchen Jackson, wrote an afterword.
The author, Alex Brown, is a horseman first, but wrote more words on the Barbaro saga than anyone else, through his work at TimWoolleyRacing.com Alex observed Barbaro when he was a racehorse, in the care of Michael Matz, and visited Barbaro on a number of occasions when he was a patient at New Bolton Center. Alex was able to create this tribute to Barbaro because he understands the language of the horseman, and wove together the thoughts and opinions from the leaders in the horse racing industry as well as those who knew Barbaro best.
On the task of writing such a comprehensive tribute, Alex says, “Writing this book has been a tremendous experience for me, but it was also intimidating. Barbaro was a terrific racehorse, who garnered a huge following as he fought for his life. It was a tremendous responsibility to get this right. I hope I have.”
Greatness and Goodness: Barbaro and his Legacy is now available on alexbrownracing.com and amazon.com. Alex is also undertaking an extensive book signing tour, information of which is also available on his website.
